Safety Health & Environment Specialist

Accountability Objectives:

  • Responsible for compliance with all SH&E regulations governing produced, resold, imported or exported chemical products in the respective regionand / or by respective country legislation.
  • Provides safety, health, environmental and regulatory interpretations / reports to Europe and Corporate SH&E, Manufacturing & Logistics, Marketing and Sales, customers and competent authorities.
  • Provides and supports implementation of occupational safety training programs to employees and third parties, as appropriate.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Implements standards and procedures to ensure that all products shipped to customers are handled, stored, transported or disposed in full compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Coordinates the activities ensuring that product safety information is disseminated in accordance with Nalco policy and national legislation, making optimal use of available Product Safety Information and communication systems.
  • Keeps abreast of, communicates and ensures compliance of national legislative developments on all Product Safety and Regulatory related matters such as Registration, Classification, Packaging, Transportation and Product Approvals. Assures registration of specific products country regulatory and poison centers.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective Product Safety, national and international Product Approval Overview and Regulatory Compliance communication network with all Business and Functional Units in the relevant region to ensure correct and timely information flow and to ensure that the right business needs and priorities are being pursued.
  • Carries regulatory overview responsibility for the use of Product Information Communication (like Material Safety Data Sheets, TREMCARDS, Labels, Dangerous Goods Notes, Tariff codes) to ensure correct usage and compliance.
  • Responds to requests from employees, customers, carriers and others for detailed Product Safety information. Responds to accidents, incidents or inquiries related to the use, misuse, exposure, release or disposal of Nalco products. Investigates accidents and recommends corrective action to eliminate further occurrences.
  • Liaises with the European SH&E organization, Business and Functional Units to communicate on changing national legislation and to provide regional guidance and direction on successfully marketing of new and existing products and programs.
  • Interprets reporting requirements for domestic and international regulations for imported substances and preparations in the relevant region. Responsible for compiling and submitting country and international reports / submissions as required.
  • Provides direct support to regions Business and Functional Units on all applicable Occupational Safety Training Programs. Supports Department Managers in providing Safety Training, with a strong focus on Field Safety Training. Assures that, in close cooperation with the BU’s, the formal risk assessments of the workplace for Sales and Service Technicians, as well as the regions sites is established.
  • Submits specific regional data for the SAP database and respective translations of phrases for product information systems in a reliable and timely manner.
  • Provides necessary training and awareness programs within the Company and outside, where necessary, in the safe handling, storage and transportation of products.
  • May participate in national chemical industry committees and other appropriate platforms to monitor and influence the development of new product safety legislation or industry standards.
  • Supports Nalco’s commitment to the guiding principles of Responsible Care® and to improve Nalco’s safety, health, environment and safety performance, and company efforts to respond to public concerns relating to design, development, manufacture, storage, marketing, distribution, use, discharge and ultimate safe disposal of chemical products.
  • Works within a matrix organization. Demonstrates cooperation and flexibility in assisting in tasks that may be outside of the regular responsibilities. Contributes ideas and independent effort to improvement of SH&E and Nalco
  • Position

Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Safety management systems or related technical degree
  • Experience in product and occupational safety / regulatory activities required
  • Good computer skills and the willingness to learn and master new software programs
  • Knowledge of local government regulations
  • High work ethic, independent working and a high need to achieve results
  • Ability to communicate well (in english) and interact professionally with co-workers. Additional languages an advantage
  • Good organizational skills
